SUMMARY:Sept. 24-28\, 2026 Meditation Retreat - LOVING YOURSELF: Nurturing the Heart Practices
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha taught that you can search the entire universe for someone more deserving of your love and affection than yourself\, and you will not find that person anywhere. \nAnd yet\, for many of us\, it seems much easier for us to offer our care\, compassion\, and even forgiveness to others than to ourselves. \nWe tend to beat ourselves up\, or give ourselves an unnecessarily hard time for our “perfectly human” imperfections. \nDuring this 5-day meditation retreat\, we’ll be deeply exploring and nurturing the heart practices of kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and a sense of profound ease (or equanimity) – for the person we spend the most time with – ourselves. \nIn the Buddhist tradition\, these four essential qualities of heart are called the Divine Abodes\, or the Bhrama Viharas\, which translates as the “dwelling places of the gods.” And the idea is that\, through our practice\, we can not only nurture these qualities\, but eventually\, we can become these qualities … and “dwell there\,” in the home of our body\, mind\, and heart. \nOur silent retreat together will include dharma talks\, periods of both guided and silent meditation\, walking meditation\, and Q&A sessions about these essential practices. Check-in will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday\, and the retreat will end at 12:45 p.m. Monday\, followed by lunch. \nLEARN MORE HERE

SUMMARY:Aug. 8 Meditation Retreat: FULL SURRENDER
DESCRIPTION:All phenomena are constantly changing\, arising and passing and arising and passing again into something new – including ourselves. “Life” is really a continuous flow; a verb instead of a frozen noun. Yet so often we suffer because of our very human tendency to grasp and cling to what is essentially in motion – especially our own identity as a solid and unchangeable “self.” \nFreedom and ease come from being able to recognize\, allow\, and align ourselves with this minute-by-minute\, second-by-second flow\, and to identify more with the vast\, loving ocean of awareness that is simply riding the waves of experience. \nDuring our time together\, we’ll be exploring a variety of guided and silent meditations to put us more in touch with the changing flow of phenomena\, a talk on annica (impermanence)\, silent walking meditation\, lunch shared in silence\, and quiet time in nature. \nWe’ll be gathering for our retreat on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m in the beautiful\, peaceful\, light-filled sanctuary of Grace Episcopal Church\, 110 N. Church Street in Berryville\, VA. The spacious pews are padded\, and the quiet church grounds include a large Parish Hall building\, and several different lovely natural places to sit and walk. Lunch will be in silence\, and participants are asked to bring their own. \nLEARN MORE HERE

SUMMARY:June 13\, 2026 Meditation Retreat: No Self\, No Problem - Exploring Anatta
DESCRIPTION:The word anatta – which means no permanently abiding self – is at the very heart and core of Buddhist meditation practice\, yet it is one of its most misunderstood concepts.\n\n\n\nWhen we explore anatta through our meditation practice\, it doesn’t mean we’re trying to get rid of who we are; it means we’re becoming more and more willing to see through the small\, false\, often negative ideas or beliefs of what we call “self.”\n\n\n\nIn actuality\, we are so much bigger than who or what we think we are. In fact\, we are not only vast\, but constantly fluid and changing: new in each moment\, and dying in each moment … much like waves on the ocean.\n\n\n\nDuring this silent meditation retreat\, we’ll be exploring anatta through various teachings\, along with meditations designed to help us loosen our tenacious grip on the ego and sense of “self\,” so that we can experience more freedom\, peace\, and ease in our lives.\n\nLEARN MORE HERE

SUMMARY:April 23-27\, 2026 Meditation Retreat: KEEP CALMLY KNOWING CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:“KEEP CALMLY KNOWING CHANGE”\n~ A summary of our entire practice of meditation\, from master and scholar Bhikkhu Analayo \nFor thousands of years\, meditation masters throughout the world have told us that if we can tap into a deep\, experiential knowledge of what is often called emptiness\, or sunyata\, we can understand the entirety of the Dharma\, the whole thing – and discover the Maha-Sukha\, the Great Bliss. \nAnd the good news is: this profound freedom isn’t far away\, or unattainable – it can be tapped into in every moment\, if we know how to look for it. \nVipassana (Insight) meditation – the oldest form of Buddhist meditation practice – shows us how to do this. \nThe root meaning of vipassana is “to see things as they are\,” means to know and experience our entire universe and everything in it as constantly and forever changing – including ourselves. \nDuring this 5-day meditation retreat\, we’ll explore how we can use our practice to begin to “see things as they are\,” and experience the profound joy and ease that can arise by letting go. \nAlong with the crucial teachings of the 5 Remembrances\, we’ll do this by deeply exploring and learning to accept and embody the 3 Truths of Life: impermanence (annica)\, suffering (dukkha)\, and interdependence\, or no-self (annata). \nOur silent retreat together will include dharma talks\, periods of both guided and silent meditation\, walking meditation\, a Q&A sessions about these essential practices\, and a special  bonfire to end. Check-in will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday\, and the retreat will end at 12:45 p.m. Monday\, followed by lunch. \nSome meditation experience might be helpful\, but the practice and its teachings is applicable to all\, and all are welcome. \nLEARN MORE HERE

SUMMARY:March 7\, 2026 Meditation Retreat: True to Your Heart
DESCRIPTION:*Both online and in-person options available \n“Through mindfulness\, we discover a truth that is deeper than beliefs. These truths will transform our character\, our deepest sense of being. What we say and do comes to be in harmony with who we are. If we don’t become someone who is true\, we have no peace nor freedom. When our life is firmly based on truth\, peace is not something we have – it is who we are.” ~ Gil Fronsdal \nAs the teachings show us\, without a strong commitment to courageously face the truth within ourselves and our own hearts\, our practice will ultimately not lead us to the freedom from suffering we desire. \nIf we are serious about discovering for ourselves what leads to happiness and freedom from suffering … we need to strive to be impeccably honest with ourselves – which is often incredibly difficult. \nDuring our time together\, we’ll be gently exploring ways in which we can begin to take a more courageous look inside our own hearts through mindfulness meditation practice to discover what is true\, and start loosening the grip of suffering that has been holding us hostage. \nLEARN MORE HERE

SUMMARY:Nov. 15 Meditation Retreat: Living With Loving-Kindness
DESCRIPTION:“The power of metta (loving-kindness) is so great that it brings up everything that stands in its way.” ~Sharon Salzberg \nMetta\, a Pali word that means “unconditional friendliness\,” is said to be the very ground of our spiritual life\, and also the most powerful practice\, in that it can overcome all the states that accompany the biggest delusion and source of our suffering – that of separateness. \nDuring our time together\, we’ll explore a variety of different mindfulness methods that can help us nurture and cultivate more metta for ourselves\, others\, and all the situations we find ourselves in; practices through which we might live more fully and authentically from this state of friendliness and kindness. \nAs our heart continues to open through this practice\, we’ll be better able to rest in a natural presence\, and foster greater compassion\, wisdom\, and love in our lives and out in our world. \nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER HERE
